MetroCluster expansion cannot be finished due to "Partners seen by this node exceeds the maximum allowed"

Issue

  • During an expansion of a MetroCluster to 8 nodes following NetApp documentation, an error is shown
Example:
cluster1::> metrocluster operation show
       Operation: configure
           State: failed
      Start Time: 10/19/2025 12:20:32
        End Time: 10/19/2025 12:20:34
          Errors: Configuration error detected for node "node1" in cluster "cluster1". Error: Partners seen by this node exceeds the maximum allowed.
                  - Check storage and RDMA interconnect connectivity.
                  - Boot into maintenance mode, and run the "ha-config show" command to make sure that both chassis and controller are set to "mcc" for a 4-node MetroCluster configuration, "mcc-2n" for a 2-node MetroCluster configuration or "mccip" for a MetroCluster over IP configuration. Run the "ha-config modify chassis" and "ha-config modify controller" commands in maintenance mode to change the HAOSC settings.cluster1::>
  • MetroCluster expansion cannot be finished

Example:

cluster1: : metrocluster configure -node-name node3
...
[Job 601] Job failed: Configuration error detected for node "node3" in Cluster "cluster1".
...
