Answer

  • As a CI AU collects data for a data collector is records all the calls and responses it gets and the intermediary files it creates to ingest the data
  • Most of these files are deleted as soon as the data is ingested, but some are kept in compressed "recording" files for potential troubleshooting analysis
  • The CI AU will automatically delete recording files that are older than 4 days
  • The OCI AU will automatically delete recording files that are older than 7 days
  • An AU will typically generate a new recording under the following circumstances
    • Any inventory poll after an AU restart
    • Any inventory poll after a collector postpone, resume, or edit
    • Any inventory failure after the last poll since the last AU restart while the last poll was a success
    • Any inventory success after the last poll since the last AU restart while the last poll was a failure
    • A inventory success when the odata inside is different from the previous poll's odata
  • Therefore a healthy collector whose source changes regularly will typically have one recording a day
  • If a data collector is encouting intermittent errors it may generate many recordings in a day, as it creates a new recording each time it alternates between success and failure
