Is it possible to manually name storage objects?

Last Updated:

Applies to

ONTAP System Manager (OSM)

Allow users to pick their own name when creating objects. This is applicable for SnapMirror destination (only prefix and suffix are available now) and share name when creating volume.

  • Several organizations have their own standard practices for naming their objects.
  • It is the way they organize and understand what applications, projects and data resides where.
  • They use items like location, business unit, or application.
  • If robust tagging is introduced into ONTAP, it may eliminate the need to name the objects manually
  • Users add the word 'LUN' in the names while creating LUNs
  • Currently, it would add the word 'LUN' in the volume name, forcing the user to rename the volume with 'VOL'.
